Pakistan's First Oscar

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy just won Pakistan's first Oscar for her short film "Saving Face", co-directed by Daniel Junge. I had the privilege of working with Sharmeen on a few projects when I worked at PBS FRONTLINE/World and she's a talented, hard-working person always working on a few great projects out of Pakistan. I saw the film yesterday as well as all the other nominees in the short documentary category and felt sure it had to win - it's a well-constructed story that interweaves several storylines and has quite a few uplifting moments for a film on such a gruesome subject: acid attacks on women by their own husbands or families. The women in the film prove to be resilient and brave, and the plastic surgeon is a colorful character who is passionate about doing his part to help fix a social problem; "“I’m part of this society that has this disease. I’m doing my bit. Come join the party.”
